People who have attended Teaching Parenting the Positive Discipline Way and Positive Discipline in the Classroom 2 day training workshops throughout the San Francisco Bay Area are invited to attend the English or Spanish Mentor Group meetings for continued professional development, networking, problem solving and camaraderie.  The Mentor Groups meet every month providing a forum and support group for people who are trained and using Positive Discipline.

Each month the group has social time with a potluck, followed by checking in and sharing what they are doing with PD in their work and homes. In addition, group members put items of concern or interest before the group for problem solving and group brainstorming. New courses have been designed, specific concerns and needs of parents explored, and suggestions are made for educators and trainers to use in their work in order to be even more effective.

Each Mentor Group meeting is also an opportunity for continued professional development, education in Adlerian theory, and practice with exercises in the manual. Positive Discipline is taught experientially, meaning that the facilitator leads participants through an exercise where they learn new concepts and tools with the understanding that they will get what is important for them to know on an individual and unique level. Each person brings their own ‘Separate Reality’ to the situation and our facilitators are trained to bring forth the learning from participants in each group and how it applies to their interactions with children, students and adults they may work with.

Mentor’s Group members make up the Program Committee for PDCR, providing the structure and context for planning and implementing Positive Discipline in the Classroom, more parenting class opportunities, research design, and the development of an effective coaching program. It is affiliated with the Positive Discipline Association and strives to constantly refresh information, improve effectiveness in teaching the materials and encouraging expanded programs and strengths in communities of color.

Close to 400 people are on the greater regional mailing list and provides valuable networking opportunities for members in areas of affinity such as families with special needs children, working in the criminal justice arena, expansion into Latino communities and providing resources to the medical community seeking a holistic approach to family functioning that fosters strength based, family health.
